How to use Yahoo Finance Charts to compare the net return of a mutual fund to other funds?

Filed Under: Expense Loophole    by: admin

Question by Lorenzo F: How to use Yahoo Finance Charts to compare the net return of a mutual fund to other funds?
when a fund produces a dividend, Yahoo Charts indicate a sharp drop in value as if a loss was involved- yet there was no loss to the net value of the investment.

Answer by jebediabartlett
You are absolutely right…. your comparisons are thrown way off. The only solution is to come up with some ” make-shift math” … something like figure the percentage of that dividend and add it to what the graph shows ?
The “historical prices” should show the amount of the price drop ( divvy)…divide that by the share price…? …add that to whatever the graph shows ?

What is a contingency plan used for in personal finance?

Filed Under: Expense Loophole    by: admin

Question by Kira Phoenix: What is a contingency plan used for in personal finance?
I’m having trouble finding out how a contingency plan works in personal finance. I’ve tried dozens of websites, but no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer by Alex
A contingency plan is a plan that relies on meeting some goal or not meeting it. Personal finance examples would be: buying a new car if I get a raise, buying a smaller house if my raises are small in the next few years, relying on savings to pay bills and cutting unnecessary spending if I lose my job.

Q&A: Why are we Americans so uneducated / misinformed about personal finance?

Filed Under: Expense Loophole    by: admin

Question by Kiwi bird: Why are we Americans so uneducated / misinformed about personal finance?
How can so many be so ignorant about something so important? Do ppl acutally think that that the gov’t is going to give them 800 bucks; do they not realize that they have to pay it back on next years income tax? Or at least have that deducted from their refund. How can so many fall for the Payday loan scams? How did so many get into ARM mortgages? Why don’t ppl educate themselves about personal finance?

Congratulations! You have it figured out. Politicians want to keep voters fat and happy so they can stay in power. Well educated voters would throw every last one of them OUT.

Importing Yahoo Finance historical quotes into Excel?

Filed Under: Expense Loophole    by: admin

Question by ets_bond_trader: Importing Yahoo Finance historical quotes into Excel?
Is there a way to have excel pull historical quotes from Yahoo Finance and then propogate the fields so that I can measure some performance metrics for different time periods (i.e. 1 and 3 month % change)?

Thanks

Answer by Gary E
You can import data from web pages using Data, Get External Data , From Web in Excel 2007 or Data, Get External Data, New Web Query in Excel 2003.

The wizards are good at taking you through the process of getting the data and placing it in a worksheet where you specify.

It will probably work well for a short term study of historical data.

However, the import process depends on the target web page layout not changing and my experience has been the web pages displaying information that the providers want to protect seem to routinely change to make maintenance of imports a major ongoing headache over time. Enough so for me that I have stuck with cutting and pasting any data of the type that I routinely want.

If you try using the import, and you need help with the Excel 2007 wizard or getting started in Excel 2003, indicate which version of Excel you have and where you are getting stuck and I, or someone else should be able to provide more assistance.

What is a great website to help with my finances?

Question by Samantha: What is a great website to help with my finances?
I need to choose a bank that can really help me save money and give me advice about my finances. What is the best way of researching for that?

Best answer:

Answer by Rick B
That is not the purpose of a bank.

You will simply have to be more disciplined. Put money in the bank and leave it there. Keep out enough to pay for the items you NEED.

How can I learn to manage my personal finances?

Filed Under: Expense Loophole    by: admin

Question by mathwhiz454: How can I learn to manage my personal finances?
I’m a recent college grad with a pretty good full-time job, but as far as overall budgeting goes and just managing my finances and being smart with my money, I’m clueless.

I want to learn how to do this, but I don’t know where to start.

Can anyone recommend any books, authors, websites, anything in order to help me understand what I’m doing and how to do it?

I really appreciate your help.

Thank you!

There is a program that I could not live without.
Microsoft Money.
It has a check register. It shows bars and graphs of where your money is going. It has an excellent budgeting tool.
About $ 50 at office depot – you might download a free old copy off the net – give it a try.

Question by chuck b: I can’t get historical prices in Finance on Mutual Funds for a range between dates?
When I set the set the mutual fund I want historical prices for like FTFAX, and select “Historical Prices” link, the next web page comes back with the error message stating that there are no prices for the date range. The dates in the windows are blank or missing. I’m using Windows Explorer on a Pentium 4

Yahoo must be having a problem right now. I tried to get historical data for a few mutual funds and was able to get none. Stocks were OK. I would try later.
